“IHG Merlin 2” generally refers to the IHG Merlin sign-on hosted at me2.ihgmerlin.com, not a separate product called Merlin 2. A failed login can mean the password is wrong, the account is locked after repeated attempts, the identity was disabled after inactivity or IHG is performing maintenance. This independent guide is not affiliated with IHG and does not operate Merlin.
Stop repeated attempts first. Skip changing the password until you identify which account state applies.
What IHG Merlin 2 means
IHG calls the internal platform IHG Merlin. The “2” used in search queries appears to come from the me2.ihgmerlin.com domain displayed by the current sign-on page. The page also provides username or password help, network-account requests and invite-code registration.
Merlin uses a Network ID to provide authorized colleagues with access to multiple IHG applications. An IHG glossary defines single sign-on as an authentication process that permits one name and password to access multiple applications, using a Network ID as its example.
That architecture explains why one identity problem can affect several tools.
It also explains the reverse situation: the employee may sign into Merlin successfully while a particular application remains unavailable because authentication and application permission are separate controls.
Locked, disabled or simply incorrect?
These conditions can look similar from the login screen, but the fixes differ.
| Account condition | What it generally means | Better first action |
|---|---|---|
| Incorrect credentials | The entered identity or password is not accepted | Confirm the Merlin ID and assigned domain |
| Locked account | Too many unsuccessful attempts may have triggered a lock | Use the current account-support route |
| Disabled account | An inactive identity may need reactivation | Ask the Service Desk or authorized hotel administrator |
| Password still synchronizing | A recent reset has not reached every IHG platform | Allow the documented synchronization period |
| Maintenance | Merlin itself is temporarily unavailable | Read the current maintenance notice |
| Missing application | Sign-on works, but the required tool is not assigned | Ask hotel management to review access |
Do the state check first. Skip applying the same password reset to every symptom.
IHG’s indexed support guidance says accounts can become locked after too many attempts with incorrect details. It also warns that stored passwords on different devices may no longer match, causing additional failed sign-ins.
Why repeated attempts make the problem worse
A saved password can remain on several devices:
- A hotel workstation
- A personal browser
- A mobile device
- An email or collaboration application
- Another IHG-connected service
After a password change, one device may continue submitting the older credential. IHG’s support guidance specifically identifies outdated saved passwords across devices as a possible reason an account becomes locked.
Pause those devices.
A practical recovery sequence is:
- Stop repeated sign-in attempts.
- Close applications that may be using the old password.
- Confirm the correct Merlin ID.
- Use IHG’s current Network Account Support process.
- Update stored credentials only after the reset completes.
- Test one IHG sign-on before reopening every application.
One controlled attempt is better than ten uncertain ones.
Do not test small password variations. Repeated guessing can turn an ordinary forgotten password into a locked-account case.
Using the current recovery flow
IHG’s current Network Account Support page directs users to enter their Merlin ID, select Next and choose Password locked or forgotten. The displayed process then routes the user through the current password-recovery method.
The current sign-on page also provides Forgot password or username? beneath the login area.
Use self-service when:
- The Merlin ID is known
- The assigned recovery method remains available
- The account is locked or the password is forgotten
- The user can complete the identity-verification step
Contact the IHG Service Desk when:
- The Merlin ID is unknown
- Recovery cannot recognize the account
- The registered authentication method is unavailable
- The account remains disabled
- The problem continues after the documented synchronization period
Do not send credentials or authentication codes in an ordinary support request.
Support needs the property, user category and general account symptom, not the secret used to sign in.
Why a new password may fail temporarily
IHG’s password instructions state that a changed password may take up to one hour to synchronize across devices and platforms.
That is a real delay, not a suggestion to reset the password again.
During that period, one IHG application may accept the new password while another still expects the earlier credential. A hotel workstation may also hold a cached session that has not refreshed.
Use this approach:
- Complete one password reset.
- Note when it was completed.
- Stop automated attempts from other devices.
- Allow the stated synchronization period.
- Test Merlin through the current sign-on page.
- Update saved credentials after successful access.
Do not alternate between the old and new passwords during synchronization. That can create more failed attempts and may lock the identity again.
Wait once. Then test.
When inactivity disables an account
An older indexed IHG global-support page states that an account can be automatically disabled after more than 180 days without a login. It also says a General Manager or hotel IT administrator may be able to re-enable a team member through MyID, while unresolved cases should be taken to the help desk.
This detail comes from an older support-page version, so employees should confirm the current reactivation process through IHG’s active Network Account Support page or hotel administrator.
An inactive account differs from a forgotten password.
Changing the password may not restore an identity whose enabled status was removed. The hotel administrator may first need to confirm:
- The employee still works at the property
- The correct hotel association
- The employee’s current role
- Whether continued Merlin access is required
- Whether the existing Network ID should be re-enabled
Do not request a new Network ID merely because the old one was inactive.
Reactivating the established identity can preserve the correct property and access history.
What hotel administrators may need to check
IHG’s older support documentation gives a MyID reactivation sequence for General Managers and hotel IT administrators. It describes opening Manage Access, selecting Manage AD Accounts, locating the user and checking the IHG Corporate Directory application before enabling the account.
Because interfaces change, treat those labels as documented historical guidance rather than a guarantee that every current screen is identical.
The durable checks are:
- Is the Network ID present?
- Is the identity enabled?
- Is the correct property attached?
- Does the role still require Merlin?
- Are the needed applications assigned?
- Is a duplicate identity creating confusion?
Hotel administrators should confirm identity status before submitting a second account request.
An enabled Network ID with a missing application requires an access review, not another password reset.
Wrong username or wrong domain
IHG password-reset instructions tell users to select their assigned domain and enter their user ID. Franchise-hotel guidance also states that someone who has forgotten the username cannot use that self-service password tool and needs help from the IHG Service Desk.
This is a common failure point.
A colleague may remember the visible portion of the Network ID but select the wrong domain. Another may mistake an IHG One Rewards email address for the Merlin username.
Merlin and IHG One Rewards are separate accounts. The rewards login is used for bookings, points and member benefits, not internal hotel-system access.
Do username recovery first. Skip resetting the guest loyalty account.
Maintenance page or locked account?
IHG maintains a Merlin maintenance page stating that the platform may be unavailable while restoration work is underway. The page can also offer links to commonly used applications during the outage.
A maintenance notice points to a platform problem rather than an individual account state.
Look for these differences:
| What appears | Likely direction |
| Explicit maintenance message | Wait or use the listed alternate application |
| Password rejection | Review identity or password |
| Locked-account notice | Use account recovery |
| Merlin opens, tool missing | Review application authorization |
| Coworkers are affected too | Check for a shared outage |
| Only one employee is affected | Review that account |
Do not reset a password because Merlin displays a current maintenance message.
Search engines may surface old maintenance pages, so confirm the notice in the present browser session. An archived page does not prove that IHG is experiencing a current outage.
Why Merlin returns to sign-on
A return to the sign-on page can have several causes, and IHG does not publish one public error dictionary covering every redirect.
Possible account-related explanations include:
- Authentication was not completed
- The account became locked
- A password change has not synchronized
- The identity is disabled
- The session ended
- The selected application requires another permission
- Merlin is undergoing maintenance
Avoid claiming that browser cookies are the definite cause unless IHG support identifies that condition for the current incident. Generic web advice can distract from a locked or disabled Network ID.
Priority: test the account state through IHG’s current support route. Skip deleting broad browser data as the first response when the account also fails on an authorized hotel workstation.
A successful sign-in on one device would point toward a local browser or device condition. Failure across authorized devices points more strongly toward the identity, account state or platform.
Missing application after recovery
Password recovery restores authentication. It does not assign hotel applications.
After signing in, a colleague may still be unable to open a specific tool because:
- The hotel code is wrong
- The role changed
- Property access was removed
- The application requires separate approval
- A transfer has not been processed
- The account was re-enabled without restoring every prior permission
Ask the General Manager or hotel IT administrator to review the exact application and property association.
Do not report only “Merlin is broken.” State that Merlin sign-on works and name the unavailable application.
That distinction saves a full password investigation when the real problem is authorization.
When to involve the Service Desk
Use IHG’s current support route when self-service does not resolve the identity issue. IHG publishes region-specific support arrangements, and the active support page should be used because contact details and workflows can change.
Prepare these non-sensitive details:
- Hotel or business unit
- Country or support region
- Whether the user is corporate, managed or franchise
- Merlin ID, when known
- Whether the account is locked, disabled or unknown
- Time of the last successful login
- Whether coworkers are affected
- Whether Merlin opens but an application is missing
Keep the report narrow.
Do not include a password, authentication code or copied security response.
Two common recovery mistakes
Resetting several times
IHG says password synchronization may take up to one hour. Multiple resets during that interval can leave devices using different saved credentials.
Creating a second identity
A disabled or locked account should be reviewed before a new Network ID is requested. Duplicate accounts can lack the original hotel and application assignments.
IHG Merlin 2 FAQ
Is IHG Merlin 2 a different platform?
No separate product was identified.
The phrase usually refers to the me2.ihgmerlin.com sign-on address for IHG Merlin.
Why is my Merlin account locked?
IHG’s support guidance says repeated incorrect attempts and outdated saved passwords across devices can contribute to account locking.
How do I reset the password?
Use IHG’s current Network Account Support route, enter the Merlin ID and choose Password locked or forgotten.
How long does synchronization take?
IHG says up to one hour.
What if I forgot my Merlin username?
IHG’s hotel guidance directs users who do not know the username to the IHG Service Desk rather than the ordinary self-service password tool.
Can inactivity disable the account?
An older IHG support page states that accounts may be disabled after more than 180 days without use. Confirm the current reactivation route with the active support page or hotel administrator.
Can my General Manager reactivate me?
IHG’s indexed support guidance says a General Manager or hotel IT administrator may be able to re-enable an eligible account through MyID. Current permissions and screen labels may vary.
Why does Merlin work but one application does not?
The Network ID has authenticated, but the hotel, role or application permission may be missing.
Should I reset my password during maintenance?
No. Read the current maintenance notice and use any alternate application links supplied by IHG.
Is my IHG One Rewards password used for Merlin?
No. IHG One Rewards is the guest account for reservations, points and member benefits.
Stop repeated attempts, determine whether the Network ID is locked, disabled or merely awaiting password synchronization, and use IHG’s current Network Account Support route. Once Merlin opens, route missing hotel applications to the property administrator rather than repeating password recovery.
