Getting the Right Access in IHG Merlin

IHG Merlin 2 usually refers to the IHG Merlin sign-on hosted at me2.ihgmerlin.com, not a separately named second edition of Merlin. Hotel employees need an authorized Network ID connected with their property and role; signing in successfully does not necessarily mean every hotel application has been assigned. This independent guide is not affiliated with IHG and does not manage Merlin accounts.

For a new hotel account, ask the General Manager, IT Administrator or Deputy General Manager to begin the invitation process. Skip public registration attempts that are not connected with a valid hotel relationship.

What “IHG Merlin 2” refers to

IHG’s sign-on page calls the platform IHG Merlin. The number in the search phrase appears to come from the me2.ihgmerlin.com address used by the current login system rather than from an IHG product called “Merlin 2.”

Merlin provides authorized IHG colleagues and hotel users with access to internal business resources. Access can differ according to the user’s employer, hotel, job and assigned responsibilities.

This produces an important distinction:

SituationWhat it indicates
Login page opensThe Merlin sign-on service is reachable
Network ID worksThe user has authenticated
One application is missingApplication access may not be assigned
Every application is unavailableAccount, hotel association or wider service may need review
Password is rejectedAuthentication or account recovery is required

A valid login confirms identity. It does not prove that the user has permission for every internal tool.

How hotel employees request a Network ID

IHG’s published account-registration instructions say hotel colleagues should ask their General Manager, IT Administrator or Deputy GM to start the Network ID invitation process. The request requires the employee’s hotel code, job title and a valid email address.

The documented process separates account sponsorship from self-registration:

  1. Hotel management starts the invitation.
  2. The employee’s hotel and role details are supplied.
  3. An invitation code is sent to the identified email address.
  4. The employee completes registration through the authorized route.
  5. Merlin access is then used for assigned hotel resources.

Do the management request first. Skip using an invitation forwarded from another colleague.

The hotel code and job title matter because they connect the account with a property and business role. A front-desk colleague, general manager and engineering employee may need different resources even when all three work at the same hotel.

IHG’s instructions also provide alternatives for unusual property situations. When no General Manager, IT Administrator or Deputy GM is employed at the property, the registration page directs the hotel to Hotel Operations Support. For a hotel that has not yet opened, it directs users toward the NHOP Manager or Regional Director.

Franchise employees and IHG employment

Many IHG-branded hotels are independently owned and operated franchise properties. IHG’s careers guidance states that, for positions at those hotels, IHG may not be the applicant’s employer.

A franchise employee can still need Merlin access for IHG hotel systems.

Those two facts are compatible:

  • The hotel operator employs the worker.
  • IHG supplies brand or hotel technology.
  • Local management sponsors the employee’s Network ID.
  • Merlin provides access to approved IHG resources.

The employment relationship determines who handles hiring, schedules and local HR matters. The Merlin account process determines access to IHG systems.

Do not contact IHG guest customer care about an employment dispute at a franchise hotel. Start with the hotel operator. Use Merlin or network support when the problem concerns the IHG account itself.

Why login works but an application is missing

Authentication and authorization are separate.

Authentication confirms that the user can sign into Merlin. Authorization determines which applications and data the authenticated user can open.

A colleague may reach the Merlin landing environment but not see a particular hotel tool because:

  • The account was assigned another job role
  • The application was never requested
  • The employee moved to a different property
  • A promotion or department change has not reached the account
  • Access belongs to a manager-level role
  • The hotel association is incomplete
  • The application uses an additional approval process
  • The account was recently created and setup is unfinished

Do not reset the password first when Merlin itself opens normally. Password recovery will not usually add a missing application.

Ask the hotel’s General Manager or IT Administrator to confirm:

  1. The employee’s Network ID
  2. The hotel code attached to the account
  3. The current job title or role
  4. The exact application that is needed
  5. Whether a separate access request has been submitted

Name the missing tool. “Merlin does not work” is too broad when the login page and other resources open correctly.

Property transfer or role change

Access problems often appear after an employee changes hotels or accepts a new position.

The existing Network ID may continue to authenticate while the assigned property or application rights still reflect the former role. That can leave the employee able to enter Merlin but unable to perform the new job’s tasks.

A transfer review should confirm:

  • Former property
  • New property
  • Effective transfer date
  • Current job title
  • Whether the Network ID should remain the same
  • Which applications are needed at the new hotel
  • Which former access should be removed

Do not create a second Network ID merely because the employee moved.

Duplicate identities can divide account history and make support less certain about which profile should receive the new property association. The hotel administrator or IHG support route should review the existing identity first.

The same principle applies to promotions. A new title in the hotel’s HR record does not necessarily add application permissions automatically.

Password recovery on the current support page

IHG’s current Network Account Support page instructs users to enter their Merlin ID, select Next, choose Password locked or forgotten, complete second-factor authentication and then save a new password that meets the displayed requirements.

The current flow differs from some older indexed instructions that referred mainly to security questions. That is why employees should use the active Network Account Support page rather than relying on an old article or saved PDF.

The general sequence is:

  1. Open the current IHG account-support route.
  2. Enter the established Merlin ID.
  3. Select Next.
  4. Choose Password locked or forgotten.
  5. Complete the displayed second-factor step.
  6. Set the replacement password.
  7. Try Merlin again after synchronization.

IHG’s password-reset guidance says a changed password can take up to one hour to synchronize across devices and platforms.

Wait once. Skip performing several resets during that interval.

Repeated password changes can leave a phone, browser or hotel workstation trying to use different stored credentials.

Forgotten username versus forgotten password

A password can be reset only when the correct account identity is known.

IHG’s hotel reset instructions state that users who have forgotten their username cannot use that self-service tool and need support from the IHG Service Desk.

Use this decision:

ProblemBetter action
Merlin ID known, password forgottenUse password recovery
Account lockedUse the locked-account recovery option
Merlin ID unknownContact the Service Desk
Login succeeds, app missingAsk hotel management to review access
New employee has no invitationAsk GM, IT Administrator or Deputy GM
Employee transferred propertiesReview hotel and role assignment

Do not guess several usernames. Repeated failed attempts can complicate account recovery.

A hotel administrator may be able to confirm whether an invitation was issued, but the Service Desk is the appropriate route when the actual Merlin identity cannot be recovered through self-service.

Second-factor authentication problems

The current Network Account Support instructions use a second-factor code during password recovery, with an authenticator application token given as an example.

A second-factor problem can occur when:

  • The employee replaced a phone
  • The authenticator registration belongs to an old device
  • Device time is inaccurate
  • The wrong account entry is selected
  • The employee never completed enrollment
  • The second-factor method is no longer available

Do not send an authentication code to a coworker, manager or ordinary support message.

When the registered factor is unavailable, follow the current IHG support route for identity recovery. A hotel manager may confirm the user’s employment or property relationship, but should not ask the employee to disclose a live authentication code.

Priority: recover the registered identity. Skip creating a new Merlin account to avoid a second-factor problem.

Maintenance page or account failure?

IHG maintains a Merlin maintenance page for periods when the platform is unavailable.

A maintenance notice points to a service condition rather than a personal account failure.

Check whether:

  • The page explicitly mentions maintenance
  • Coworkers at the same hotel are also affected
  • The login page opens but internal tools do not
  • An alternate application link is provided
  • The notice contains a current date or window

Do not reset the password because a maintenance page appears.

Search engines may retain older IHG maintenance pages, so read the notice shown in the current browser session rather than relying on a result snippet. An outdated maintenance notice found through search does not establish that Merlin is currently down.

Internal careers and MyHR access

Merlin is also easy to confuse with IHG’s internal career process.

IHG’s internal-careers page says colleagues with MyHR access can sign into that system and select the Current Jobs icon. Colleagues without MyHR access are instructed to use the external search-and-apply page and identify themselves as a current IHG employee in the application.

This means a Merlin account does not automatically establish MyHR access.

A franchise-hotel colleague might use Merlin for hotel operations but lack the corporate MyHR route described for internal applicants. In that case, IHG’s public careers instructions provide the alternative application method.

Use MyHR for internal-career access when assigned. Use Merlin for its authorized hotel resources. Use IHG One Rewards for guest loyalty.

Different accounts.

Employee room-rate access

IHG’s Employee Room Benefit Programme requires an IHG One Rewards member number. The programme page says an employee may link that membership number with a Merlin ID, while a manager can validate eligible employees who do not have a Merlin ID.

That detail explains why an employee can sign into Merlin yet fail to see or book an employee rate.

The possible records include:

  1. Employment eligibility
  2. Merlin identity
  3. IHG One Rewards membership
  4. Link or manager validation
  5. Hotel and rate availability

Resetting a Merlin password does not link a loyalty account.

Check the employee-benefit setup and IHG One Rewards membership separately. The rate is also subject to the programme’s booking conditions and participating availability.

Where to get support

IHG’s current Network Account Support page should be the starting point for password and locked-account recovery.

Use hotel management for:

  • Starting a new Network ID invitation
  • Confirming the hotel code
  • Reviewing the employee’s job role
  • Requesting application access
  • Handling a property transfer
  • Confirming employment eligibility

Use the IHG Service Desk for:

  • Forgotten Merlin ID
  • Recovery that cannot be completed
  • Second-factor access failure
  • Account lock that self-service does not resolve
  • Technical access remaining broken after local review

Use the appropriate application owner or hotel administrator when Merlin opens but one application remains unavailable.

IHG publishes region-specific support information, and those routes can change. Use the current link displayed through the account-support or Merlin environment rather than copying telephone details from an old third-party guide.

Two common access mistakes

Resetting the password for missing permissions

A password reset restores authentication. It does not add a hotel, role or application assignment.

Creating another Network ID after a transfer

Ask the hotel administrator to update or review the existing account first. A duplicate identity may not carry the prior access or employment association.

IHG Merlin 2 FAQ

Is Merlin 2 a separate IHG portal?

No separate product name was found.

The phrase generally refers to the me2.ihgmerlin.com address used by the IHG Merlin sign-on system.

Who starts a hotel employee’s account request?

IHG instructs employees to ask their General Manager, IT Administrator or Deputy GM to start the Network ID invitation process.

What information is needed for an invitation?

IHG’s registration instructions list the hotel code, job title and a valid email address.

Why can I sign in but not see my hotel application?

The Network ID may be valid while the application, hotel or role assignment remains incomplete. Ask the hotel administrator to review the exact application needed.

Should I create a new ID after changing hotels?

No. Have the existing identity and property association reviewed first.

How do I reset a forgotten password?

Enter the Merlin ID through IHG’s current Network Account Support process, choose Password locked or forgotten and complete the displayed second-factor step.

What if I forgot my Merlin username?

IHG’s hotel instructions say users who do not know the username need to contact the IHG Service Desk.

How long can a new password take to work?

IHG says synchronization can take up to one hour across devices and platforms.

Is Merlin the same as MyHR?

No. IHG’s internal-careers page describes MyHR as the route where eligible colleagues can open Current Jobs. Colleagues without that access use the external careers route.

Does every IHG hotel employee work for IHG?

No. IHG states that some roles are at independently owned and operated franchise hotels, where IHG is not the employer.

Ask hotel management to sponsor one Network ID with the correct hotel code and job title. When Merlin opens but a tool is missing, request a review of the hotel, role and application assignment rather than resetting the password or creating another identity.
